About the NU Accelerate Scholarship

The NU Accelerate Scholarship allows Early Decision (ED) students to jumpstart their Northeastern academic experience through remote, asynchronous coursework offered by the NU Accelerate Pre-College Programs. Leveraging coursework curated specifically for first-year Northeastern students taking remote courses, you will have the opportunity to enroll in as many as two (2) courses, earning up to eight (8) credits prior to matriculating; the non-renewable NU Accelerate scholarship will cover the full tuition cost of all courses taken. Please note that the scholarship does not cover course material expenses, such as textbooks or software.

These courses, selected specifically for our ED students, may secure credits that can contribute to graduation—through required coursework for your major or minor, NUpath requirements within the core curriculum, or elective credit. Courses will span a wide range of academic areas, such as Calculus, Economics, Global Health, First Year Writing, Business, and more. Additional information to help you identify your Accelerate course preferences, as well as information on how to register, can be found below.

ED students will choose from coursework offered in the Summer Terms (Summer 1 and Full Summer begin May 6, and Summer 2 begins July 1). Please note that for each NU Accelerate course you take, the course title, associated credit, and grade earned will appear on your undergraduate transcript. NU Accelerate courses receive a letter grade (they are not pass/fail), and the grade earned will be factored into your undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA).

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Understanding NU Accelerate Courses

NU Accelerate courses are “remote, asynchronous coursework.” What does that mean, and how do I know if it’s a good fit for me?

NU Accelerate courses are fully online and accessible through the learning platform Canvas. The asynchronous format means you can access your coursework at the time most convenient to you, offering students maximum flexibility. There is no set meeting time where all students sign on simultaneously for class, although there may be times when a subset of students need to coordinate a synchronous meeting to work on a group project. This modality is the best fit for students who are strong independent learners with excellent time management skills.

    Who teaches the courses?

NU Accelerate courses are taught by faculty members of Northeastern University. Faculty members create pre-recorded lectures and students can meet with them at virtual office hours.

What can I expect from my interaction with my fellow students?

Students will connect through dynamic interactive tools on Canvas, such as discussion boards. Depending on the course, students may have the opportunity to engage with other students through group projects.

How many courses can I take?

You may enroll in up to two courses across the Summer Terms but may not exceed a total of two courses under any circumstances. Please note that required recitations or seminars (such as CS 1802) do not count toward the maximum of two courses.

Can I take a NU Accelerate course for dual enrollment, dropping one of my HS senior year courses to take a NU Accelerate course?

NU Accelerate is not meant to be a formal dual enrollment program. Rather, it is meant as an opportunity for students who have additional bandwidth in their senior spring and summer to take courses to jumpstart their Northeastern education.

If you are interested in dropping a class that is required for your high school graduation in order to take a NU Accelerate course—this is not permitted. The purpose of this program is not to have students drop required high school coursework- doing so could present a risk to students.
If you are interested in dropping a class that is not required for your high school graduation in order to take a NU Accelerate course—this may be permitted. The process for any senior year scheduling changes is for you to contact NU Accelerate at nuaccelerate@northeastern.edu so that we can verify that your senior year schedule carries equivalent academic rigor as your schedule when you were admitted to the university. NU Accelerate courses are not intended as replacements to your current high school curriculum but rather as additional coursework.

Note the following: Understanding and fulfilling high school graduation requirements is the responsibility of the student. All students must complete high school graduation requirements and present a final transcript to Northeastern in order to matriculate.

    NU Accelerate Scholarship

Do I need to pay for these courses?

You may take up to two courses and the cost of tuition is fully covered by the NU Accelerate Scholarship. You will not be billed for these courses unless you do not matriculate to Northeastern University; in that case you will receive an invoice for the tuition and will not be eligible to receive a transcript for your courses until the balance is paid in full.

If I take NU Accelerate courses and do not matriculate to Northeastern, am I responsible for the cost of the courses?

Yes. If you take NU Accelerate courses and do not matriculate you will be responsible for a tuition bill at the cost of $1,938 per credit hour (i.e. a four credit course will be billed at $7,752).

Is the scholarship renewable or transferable? If I take fewer than two courses can I use the tuition credit for my upcoming Fall Term?

The NU Accelerate Scholarship is non-renewable and non-transferable. If you enroll in fewer than two courses for NU Accelerate you will not be able to transfer the scholarship to a future term.

Am I eligible to participate in NU Accelerate if I decide to defer my offer of admission to Fall 2025?

Yes, you are eligible to participate in NU Accelerate for this year (Summer 2024 terms) even if you plan to defer. You will not be eligible to participate in NU Accelerate for the next cycle (Summer 2025 terms). If you participate in NU Accelerate and do not matriculate you will be responsible for a tuition bill at the cost of $1,938 per credit hour (i.e. a four credit course will be billed at $7,752).

Does this scholarship cover textbooks or resources that may be needed for the course?

The scholarship covers tuition only. Therefore, students are responsible for purchasing any additional required course materials. If you have concerns about purchasing course materials please email nuaccelerate@northeastern.edu.

    Course Credit and Transcript

How many credits are the courses?

Each course is four (4) credits. Note: some courses have required recitations or seminars that may be 0-credit or 1-credit; the 0-credit or 1-credit recitations do not “count” as one of your two NU Accelerate courses.

Do I receive a transcript for NU Accelerate courses? Is it the same transcript as my undergraduate one?

For each NU Accelerate course you take, the course title, associated credit, and grade earned will appear on your undergraduate transcript. NU Accelerate courses receive a letter grade (they are not pass/fail), and the grade earned will be factored into your undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA).

What is the minimum grade needed to receive credit for a NU Accelerate course?

As with any undergraduate course, a D or better is needed to receive credit.

Can I drop or withdraw from a course that I begin enrollment in? What are the key dates I need to know?

Yes. If you wish to drop or withdraw from a course, you are responsible for doing this online by following these instructions. NU Accelerate adheres to Northeastern University’s policies and calendar regarding a student adding, dropping, or withdrawing from a course:

Dropping a class: Dropping a course means that there is no record on your transcript of you having enrolled in the course. Please note the drop dates for the various terms: For the Summer 1 Term, the last day to drop a class is May 19; For the Full Summer Term, the last day to drop a class is May 26; For the Summer 2 Term, the last day to drop a class is July 15. Students who drop a class by those dates will not have the course title, credits, or a permanent notation (W) on their transcript.

Withdrawing* from a class: Withdrawing from a course means that there is a record of the course on your transcript; it will list the course name with a “W” for “withdrawal.” For the Summer 1 Term, the last day to withdraw from a course with a W is June 23; For the Full Summer Term, the last day to withdraw from a course with a W is August 11; For the Summer 2 Term, the last day to withdraw from a course with a W is August 18. After these dates, students will receive the letter grade assigned by the faculty member.

*If you withdraw from a course with a W grade the course will not carry over to your undergraduate transcript but it will remain on your pre- matriculant transcript, which serves as an official university transcript. As you choose NU Accelerate coursework, we encourage you to carefully consider the time commitment of the course(s), your own senior year obligations, and other personal factors.

When will my official transcript be available?

Students will have access to their official transcript for Summer coursework in September 2024 after matriculation.

Do I receive a letter grade? Will it factor into my undergraduate GPA?

NU Accelerate courses receive a letter grade (they are not pass/fail), and the grade earned will be factored into your undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA).

    NU Accelerate Course Selection

What are the steps for participating in NU Accelerate?
    • Check your email regularly! Actions, deadlines, and reminders are sent regularly to the email address associated with your application.
    • Complete the step in your Application Status Check to indicate your intention to participate in NU Accelerate.
    • Review the Course Catalog, Course Selection Guide, and Course Registration Guide (an e-guide to explain the process for registering for courses online, as well as the steps to add, drop or withdraw from a course).
    • Register for your course(s) as soon as registration opens!
Am I guaranteed the course(s) I want to register for?

Students are not guaranteed their top course(s). Courses have a maximum capacity to ensure a high-quality experience and will fill on a first-come, first-served basis. While registering online for the courses students will be able to see if a course has filled to capacity.

If the class is full, can I join a waitlist?

Some courses may offer the opportunity to join a waitlist. For information on waitlists, please visit the Class Waitlists webpage.

When will I see my courses and syllabi in Canvas?

Faculty will “publish” their courses in Canvas when they’re complete. This can be up until the day courses begin.

How do I see what time my class meets?

As a reminder, the courses are asynchronous and do not have a set meeting date and time when the class meets live. It is your responsibility to log in often during the term and keep up with assignments and assessments on your own schedule.
